Gaining Knowledge and Improving Skills to More
Effectively Provide Care to Diverse Populations
- Hon. Wadie Thomas
Cultural competence includes: (1) awareness of one’s
own cultural worldview; (2) attitude toward cultural
differences; (3) knowledge of different cultural practices
and worldviews; and (4) cross-cultural skills. Developing
cultural competence results in an ability to understand,
communicate with, and effectively interact with people
across cultures. The session will consider how lawyers
can fulfill their duties of confidentiality and loyalty and
their advisor role (Neb. Ct. R. of Prof. Cond. §§ 3-502.1,
3-501.6, 3-501.7) with clients of different racial or cultural
backgrounds and how cultural incompetency hinders an
attorney’s ability to follow the duties set forth in Neb. Ct.
R. of Prof. Cond. §§ 3-501.1 and 3-507.1.
